I reviewed two albums for Australian Magazine "Acclaim Mag"...one of which was my all time fav pick and since i've been a Rage'holic for years i decided to review my fav album from the fearsome foursome...here it is:-
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES
I can still remember the day i first heard rage
against the machines....it was about 13 yrs ago in a
friends car. At the time "The judgement night"
soundtrack was the hottest thing floating around all
budding garage bands and hip hop emcees. As a young
punk trying to blend hip hop with rock....rage showed
me the path...from the opening lines of "I was hooked
and became a true rageholic...now having been a Rage
fan ever since...looking back it really is a tough
decision for me to pick my all time fav release from
the revolutionary rockers to review. Which is my fav?
The one that got me started...the explosive follow
up...the covers album or the grand finale? Most Rage
fans i know would pick "evil empire" as the best and
no doubt it contains some the most fiery rage tracks
ever written but guess my choice has to be "The battle
of los angeles" for one reason and one reason
only...Zack's flow...having stuck to his trademark
jagged running flows in the last 3 releases, Zack took
a revolutionary way forward vocally by replacing his
vocaly stylings with more spoken word flows that are
poetic yet laced with melody. These vocal stylings
are evident in tracks like "Sleep now in the fire",
"Voice of the voiceless", "born of a broken man" and
"Born as ghosts" which for me personally are some of
the standout ones on the album.
Two others that
deffinitely meet the mark and are my top 2 are "Calm
Like a Bomb" and "Mic Check" which unlike the earlier
few have all the existing Rage formulas of catchy
hooks, riffs and tom's trademark solos but with added
spice. Lines like " the riot be the rhyme of the
unheard" and Tim's thundering bassline make "Calm Like
a Bomb" a rage track that culminates in utter
chaos..."watcha say watcha say what?" still rings even
when the track has stopped playing!! Mic Check on the
hand is rage hip hop ala "Bullet in your head" (from
their first album) but perfected. Tom's catchy riffs
take a backseat here but Tim's basslines and Zack's
flows make this a true club banger. The numerous
remixes by Dj Muggs and DJ Shadow that have been
circulating the mixtape circuit attest to that.
The other tracks seem to be just uninspired fillers to
make this effort a full length release. It could also
have been due to the strains in the band's
relationship as they broke up less than a year later.
All in all the band is back and we're all waiting
patiently for a follow up...tick tock....tick....tock
